No. 20/25 Queens Hosts UVA Wise in Annual Homecoming Game

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 20/25 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team returns to action tomorrow afternoon to conclude a three-game homestand in Charlotte against UVA Wise. Tip-off from Curry Arena is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on the Queens Sports Network.
 
Saturday marks just the fourth time that the two schools have squared off after UVA Wise joined the South Atlantic Conference in 2019-20. The Royals are a perfect 3-0 against the Cavaliers, earning a 91-67 win on Jan. 16 in Wise, Virginia in the most recent matchup.
 
Queens Athletics is not allowing spectators at any event inside of the Levine Center in accordance with CDC guidelines and the most recent mandate from Mecklenburg County. IN THE BACKCOURT
 
-Junior point guard Kenny Dye runs the Queens offense, averaging a SAC-high 5.3 assists per game to go along with 12.2 points per contest on 39.3 percent shooting from deep. Redshirt-freshman guard AJ McKee had his best career game as a Royal on Thursday afternoon, filling up the stat sheet with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
 
-UVA Wise features one of the most dynamic scorers within Division II in junior Cameron Whiteside who averages 20.8 points per game. Whiteside is shooting 47.2 percent from the floor and 83 percent from the free throw line while also pulling down 7.2 rebounds per contest.
 
IN THE FRONT COURT
 
-In the post, redshirt-sophomore Jamari Smith has returned to the court after missing the first six games of the year and is leading the team with 15.8 points per game while shooting 48.2 percent from the floor. Sophomore Gavin Rains controls the paint with a League-high nine rebounds per game, including four rebounds per game on the offensive glass, to go along with 11.1 points per game.
 
-Forwards Kaeleb Carter and Izeah Parker combine to average 17.8 points per game, with Parker shooting 58.3 percent from the field.
 
ON THE SIDELINES
 
-Queens Head Coach Bart Lundy is in his 19th season overall and 13th season at Queens. During his career with the Royals, Lundy is the program's winningest coach with a 298-97 (.754) record and has a 394-184 (.682) career coaching record at Queens and NCAA Division I High Point University. During his reign, Queens has won five conference championships (three Conference Carolinas, two South Atlantic Conference), four Southeast Region Championships and has made seven appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
 
-Blake Mellinger is in his 8th season in charge of his alma mater and has guided the program from the NAIA to NCAA membership during his tenure. A 2006 graduate of UVA Wise, Mellinger has a 58-157 (.270) career record and has been with the Cavaliers for a combined total of 16 years as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
 
-The Royals are 11-4 overall with an 10-3 record in SAC play. Queens ranks among the NCAA Top 25 in scoring defense as opponents are scoring just 67.6 points per game on 40.2 percent shooting from the floor. The Royals force 14.4 turnovers per contest and score 16.1 points per game off of those miscues.
 
-Offensively, the Royals score 77.6 points per game and have scored 85 or more points six times this season. Queens is shooting 46.5 percent from the floor and 38.1 percent from 3-point range as a team while holding a plus-nine margin in rebounds per game.
 
-Last time out, Queens cruised to a 95-70 victory over Mars Hill University on Thursday afternoon inside Curry Arena. Sophomore Jay'Den Turner had a career-high 20 points to lead four Royals in double figures.
 
-The Cavaliers are 3-12 overall with an identical 3-12 mark in SAC play. Last time out, UVA Wise suffered a 97-70 defeat at the hands of Carson-Newman University on Wednesday night. Parker ended the night with a team-high 12 points on a career-high six field goals, while Carter boasted a career-high seven assists and tallied nine points.
 
-Wise ranks near the middle of the League in scoring with 78.3 points per game, while the defense ranks near the bottom of the standings, giving up 91 points per game to opponents.
 
-In the previous matchup on Jan. 16, Queens shot 52.6 percent from the floor in the first half and the high-scoring Cavaliers to 14 points below their season average in a 24-point win on the road. Junior Quan McCluney led the way with his first career double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Smith scored a game-high 17 points in just 21 minutes of play.
