Royals Down Wingate on Senior Day Saturday Afternoon

RESULTS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's swimming team shined on Saturday afternoon winning 11 events and defeating Wingate 168-77 inside the Levine Aquatic Center. Prior to the events, the Royals celebrated their remarkable men's and women's senior class for all of their accomplishments throughout their career.

Coming off a first-place finish at the 2021 Kellianne Nagy Fall Frenzy on Nov. 21, Queens looked to improve upon their strong start to the season. Head Coach Jeff Dugdale was treated to another incredible effort as the men took down Wingate last night on the road.

In the only team relay event of the afternoon, the Royals A and B units took first and second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The A pairing of Monica Gumina, Cece Mayer, Tova Andersson, and Danielle Melilli took first with a time of 3:27.48. Just behind was the grouping of Kayla Tennant, Giulia Grasso, Caroline Lawrence, and Anna De Boer grabbing second at 3:30.09.

In the individual events, Danielle Melilli dominated the pool winning all three events. The junior posted victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.01), 50-yard freestyle (23.35), and 100-yard freestyle (51.15), including B cut times in both freestyle events. Amber Rydzewski was also outstanding winning the 1,000-yard freestyle with a B cut time of 10:22.74 and the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.93).

Three Royals posted top three finishes across three events, including Maike Jung, Kayla Tennant, and Giulia Grasso. Jung would take the crown in the 200-yard IM (2:10.03) after beating a Wingate by a tenth of a second. The freshman would also record a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.15) as well as a third-place swim in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.33). Fellow teammate Kayla Tennant notched a pair of B cut swims, including a first-place swim in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.62) and a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.19). The senior capped off the afternoon with a second-place swim in the 100-butterfly (57.48).

Giulia Grasso, Tova Andersson, and Cece Mayer each added a top place finish. Grasso took the 200-yard freestyle with a B cut time of 1:50.62, Andersson won the 200-yard backstroke at 2:03.30, and Mayer won the 100-yard butterfly with a B cut time of 55.53.

The Royals will have a break in the action for Christmas before they return to the pool in the new year. Queens will open the new year at Duke for a meet with the Blue Devils and the University of Tennessee on Jan. 8.
