No. 7 Royals Look to Stay Hot in Big SAC Road Showdown with Anderson

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 7/16 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team will wrap up their first road trip of the young conference schedule as they travel to Anderson (3-1, 1-1 SAC) for a South Atlantic Conference clash on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. The Royals are fresh off a thrilling buzzer-beater win at Carson-Newman on Saturday where they downed the Eagles 83-81.
 
Tuesday night's meeting will mark the 46th contest between Queens and Anderson, with the Royals having a commanding 35-10 record, including having won three straight meetings and 15 of the last 16.  In their last meeting, Queens took care of the Trojans in the SAC Pilot Flying J Tournament quarterfinals by a final of 96-91. In that game, Kenny Dye dropped in 24 points, going 7-of-10 from the floor and fell just one assist shy of a double-double with nine total.

  • In the season opener against Young Harris, the Royals set a new program record with 133 points scored as eight Royals finished with double figures.
  • Head Coach Bart Lundy picked up his 400th career victory in the dominant season opener. Lundy enters his 14th season at Queens and 20th season overall as a collegiate head coach.
  • The Royals are coming off an exhilarating buzzer-beater finish on the road at Caron-Newman with Jamari Smith dropping in the game-winning three-pointer as time expired.  Smith tied for the team-high with 16 points off the bench to go along with 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.  AJ McKee added 16 points of his own, hitting 6-of-9 FG's while sinking four of his five three-point attempts. Jay'Den Turner and BJ McLaurin were both in double figures as well with 14 points and 13 points, respectively.  The Royals were on fire from deep, shooting better than 57-percent from three-point range. 
  • Queens has displayed their depth early as 10 Royals are averaging double digit minutes per game, while seven Royals are averaging more than 17.0 mpg.
  • Queens remains in the national spotlight as the Royals sit at No. 7 in the D2SIDA Week One Media Poll, No. 1 in this week's D2SIDA Southeast Region Poll, and No. 16 in the NABC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • With the return of their top six scorers and top five rebounders, Queens was picked to finish atop the South Atlantic Conference's Preseason Poll, as voted on by the League's coaches. The Royals received over half the first-place votes and 150 total votes as the preseason favorites.
  • Kenny Dye and Jamari Smith were each named to the SAC's First-Team Preseason All-Conference Team and Gavin Rains earned Second-Team honors.
 
Anderson University (3-1, 1-1 South Atlantic Conference)
  • The Trojans come into Tuesday night having won three of their first four games this season, including an upset of the No. 2 Flagler, who were picked atop the D2SIDA Southeast Region Preseason Poll and are 3-1 overall to start the season.  Their lone loss is to SAC foe No. 14/17 Lincoln Memorial by a final of 91-73 on November 17.   
  • Anderson bounced back from a tough loss on the road with a high-scoring victory over UVA-Wise their last time out, 104-95 at home.  On the night, the Trojans dropped in 11 three-pointers as a team and shot 66% from the floor to score their season-high as a team.  Despite being out-rebounded and having more turnovers than UVA-Wise, they put up 26 points off turnovers and 40 points in the paint.  Anderson was paced by graduate forward, Josh Livingston, who cashed in for a season-high 26 points and 13 rebounds on 10-of-10 shooting from the field, including four three-pointers.
  • Graduate forward, Parker Dortch, leads the way for the Trojans averaging 21.0 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game to boot.  Not to be outdone, junior guard, Crosby James II, is scoring better than 19.5 points per game and has hit 6-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc.  James II scored a game-high 27 points with six three-pointers in that SAC quarterfinal matchup last season.  Their top five scorers have shot better than 60% from the field. 
  • Carson-Newman was picked to finish eighth in the SAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll after posting a 7-12 conference mark last season.  Their win over Flagler has seen the Trojans rise to sixth in the latest D2SIDA Southeast Region poll.
