Royals Look to Continue Strong Start to the Season At Carson-Newman

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 7/16 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team will hit the road for their first road trip of the young season as they travel to Carson-Newman (1-2; 0-1 SAC) for a South Atlantic Conference clash on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Royals have opened the new season 3-0, including an 82-71 conference victory on Wednesday night against Catawba inside Curry Arena.
 
Saturday afternoon's meeting will mark the 21st contest between Queens and Carson-Newman, with the Royals owning a 16-4 advantage. Prior to last season's 88-79 loss in Charlotte, Queens had bested the Eagles 13 straight times dating back to Dec. 12, 2015. In last season's matchup, Jamari Smith dropped a career-high 26 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds.

  • In the season opener against Young Harris, the Royals set a new program record with 133 points scored as eight Royals finished with double figures.

  • Returning their top six scorers and top five rebounders, Queens was picked to finish atop the South Atlantic Conference's Preseason Poll, as voted on by the League's coaches. The Royals received over half the first-place votes and 150 total votes as the preseason favorites.
  • Kenny Dye and Jamari Smith were each named to the SAC's First-Team Preseason All-Conference Team and Gavin Rains earned Second-Team honors.
 
Carson-Newman University (1-2; 0-1 South Atlantic Conference)
  • The Eagles are 1-2 on the young season with a 108-75 victory on opening night over Lees-McRae College in the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge. In their last matchup, the Eagles dropped their conference opener 73-69 to Tusculum.
  • Carson-Newman was picked to finish second in the SAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll after posting a 16-6 overall record last season and winning the conference tournament championship.
  • Preseason Second Team All-Conference selections EJ Bush and Ren Dyer return for the Eagles.
