Royals Fall in Home Opener with Catawba

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (1-1, 0-1 SAC) fell to the Catawba College Indians by a score of 70-57 inside Curry Arena. The Indians entered the D2SIDA National Poll at No. 20 this week.

After a slow shooting start for both teams with Queens leading 2-0 until the 4:44 mark in the first quarter, the Indians (3-0) went on an 8-0 run to go up 8-2 on the Royals. The two teams would trade baskets the rest of the quarter, as the Indians led by a score of 16-8 at the end of the first frame.

After trading baskets to start the second, the Indians went on a 17-4 run to take a 35-20 halftime lead.

By the midway point on the third, Queens had cut the deficit to nine, 42-31. However, the Indians went on another commanding run to extend their lead to 56-37 at the end of three.

The Royals did not go down without a fight in the fourth, closing the margin to as little as seven, 62-55. Unfortunately, one final surge by the Indians put the game out of reach for the Royals, as the Indians came out on top 70-57.

Kalaya Hall led all Royals with 25 points after shooting 8-of-13 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the foul line. Kiana Barkhoff led under the glass with 10 rebounds to go along with her eight points while Malea Garrison secured seven rebounds of her own off the bench.

Catawba had four players score in double figures as Sara McIntosh and Taisha DeShazo led with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Royals travel to Carson Newman this Saturday for another conference matchup with the Eagles at 2:00.
