CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Royals (7-10, 5-7) hosted Belmont Abbey College this evening in their annual "Breast Cancer Awareness" game at home on Bessant Field falling 1-0 to the Crusaders (10-6, 6-5). Tonight's match did not count as a South Atlantic Conference game as the two teams already split the home-and-home series this season.
Facing less than ideal weather conditions due to continuous rainfall, the Royals started slow on offense as they were unable to record a shot in the game's opening quarter. Belmont Abbey was able to strike first putting one past Queens goalkeeper
Avian Thompson in the second quarter. They then took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Queens would make a strong push to even the match in the second half playing much more aggressively on the offensive end. However, Belmont Abbey keeper Chloe Parker was able to come up with saves on each of the Royals' shot attempts on goal.
In the end, Queens was outshot 16-10 by the Crusaders who put 10 shots on goal compared to the Royals' six shots on goal.
Avian Thompson made three saves in her first half of work and took the loss in the cage while
Marlee Geppert started in the net in the second half, recording five saves.
The Royals end regular season play on Saturday, October 30 as they host their "Senior Day", taking on Frostburg State University at Bessant Field. The game is set to start at 12 p.m. and will air live on the Queens Sports Network. Stay up to date with the Queens University Field Hockey team on Instagram and Twitter @QueensUFH.
