Balanced Attack Leads No. 12/15 Queens to Fifth Straight Victory

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – In the first game of a three-game road swing, the No. 12/15 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team used a balanced offensive attack to steal a 63-62 road win over the Eagles of Carson-Newman University on Wednesday night inside Holt Fieldhouse.

The Royals improved to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in South Atlantic Conference action with their fifth consecutive win of the season and 13th straight win over the Eagles in the all-time series. Carson-Newman falls to 2-4 overall with all of its games coming in League play.

Juniors Kenny Dye and Quan McCluney and redshirt-sophomore Jamari Smith each finished with 13 points for Queens, while Smith also pulled down eight rebounds. Sophomores Jay'Den Turner and Gavin Rains continued to dominate on the board, pulling down nine and seven rebounds, respectively.

Queens scored the game's first five points and led 10-4 after a Smith layup less than five minutes into the game. However, the Eagles went on a 13-5 over the ensuing four minutes of play to claim a two-point lead. Carson-Newman remained in front for much of the half, building a lead as large as nine points, 24-15, with just over eight minutes to play.

A McCluney layup at 3:06 cut the deficit to one point as Dye put the Royals back on top, 32-30, with a 3-pointer from the top the key just 30 seconds later. A late spurt by the Eagles gave the home team a 36-34 edge heading into the halftime break.

A free throw from Rains and Dye's fourth 3-pointer of the game quickly gave Queens the lead to open the second half before Carson-Newman battled back to even the score at 42-all with 16 minutes to go.

In a game that featured five lead changes and 14 total ties, McCluney made two free throws with just over a minute remaining to give the Royals the advantage. The Eagles had a look at a potential game-winner with one second on the clock but the Royals survived the road scare.

Queens remains on the road for the next contest against UVA-Wise on Saturday, Jan. 16 in Wise, Va.
