WISE, VA. – The No. 12/15 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team ran its win streak to six games in a row on Saturday with a 91-67 victory over UVA Wise in South Atlantic Conference action.
Queens improved to 8-2 overall and 7-1 in League play behind an offensive performance that saw the Royals shoot 52.6 percent from the floor in the first half and a defensive performance that held the high-scoring Cavaliers (0-7, 0-7) to 14 points below their season average.
The Royals held the SAC's leading scorer Cameron Whiteside to just 13 points, including two in the second half, after the junior was averaging nearly 28 points per game entering the day.
Whitside made the game's first basket and the Cavaliers kept the score close over the opening six minutes of play before back-to-back jumpers from Queens' sophomore
Jay'Den Turner ran the lead to five points, 14-9, with 13:24 to play.
Queens' lead grew to double digits five minutes later following a 3-pointer from junior
Quan McCluney and the Royals led by its widest margin of 22 points, 54-32, at the halftime break with a late 3-pointer from junior
Kavan Hill. Hill and McCluney combined to shoot 8-for-13 from deep in the contest.
The momentum remained in Queens' favor to open the second half as the lead quickly grew to 28 points, 68-40, following a 13-8 run over the half's opening eight minutes. The advantage never dipped below 18 points for the Royals as Queens cruised to the road victory.
McCluney led the Royals with his first career double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while redshirt-sophomore
Jamari Smith scored a game-high 17 points in just 21 minutes of play. Hill followed with a career-high 14 points of his own and junior
Kelyn Pennie rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points. Sophomore
Gavin Rains pulled down 10 rebounds in the post.
The Royals end their three-game road trip on Monday, Jan. 18 when the team travels to Hickory, N.C. for a rematch with Lenoir-Rhyne University at 2 p.m. Earlier this month, Queens collected an 88-68 win over the Bears in Charlotte.
