Royals Split Thrilling Doubleheader in Rollins Round Robin Finale

Winter Park, Fla - The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (2-4) split its Sunday double-header capping the 2020 Rollins Round Robin in captivating fashion. The Royals came from behind to defeat Bentley University 5-4 but surrendered a late lead losing to Rollins College 2-1.

Game One: Queens 5 Bentley 4

Queens junior starting pitcher Shannon McGuire opened five shutout innings in a pitchers duel that turned offensive in the later innings. Junior infielder Grace Wesoly broke the silence in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly jetting Queens on top 1-0.

An explosive four-run sixth inning from Bentley turned the tables and put the Royals in a three-run hole heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Queens opened the inning with three straight hits to cut the deficit 4-2. The inning was extended by consecutive Bentley errors and Queens sophomore McKenzie McCullen capitalized tying the game 4-4 with a one-out single. With runners at second and third and one out, junior Jordan Hunt laid down a sacrifice bunt that sprung Gerlea Patton across home plate for the electrifying walk-off victory.

Game Two: Rollins 2 Queens 1

Queens senior starting pitcher Courtney Pearson dealt six shutout innings in a tight defensive battle that featured just five combined hits. Queens led for the majority breaking the shutout in the third inning to lead 1-0.

The Royals held firm to their one run advantage until Rollins tied the game on a defensive error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh tying the game 1-1. Rollins followed with a walk off double on the next at-bat to win the game 2-1.

Queens is back on the road for a double-header with UNC-Pembroke on Wednesday, February 12th at 1 p.m.
