Queens Sweeps UNC Pembroke in Wednesday Doubleheader

Pembroke, NC - The Queens University of Charlotte softball team tallied consecutive road victories in its Wednesday doubleheader at UNC Pembroke. Queens won game one by a 5-0 final and made an extra-inning comeback in game two to win 3-1.

Game One: Queens 5 UNC Pembroke 0

Royals junior starting pitcher Shannon McGuire pitched a superb seven inning shutout limiting the Braves to eight total baserunners. McGuire picked up her third win of the season and was complemented by a quartet of home runs to solidify a decisive victory. Kayla Smith, Alyssa Strickler, Kelly Winter, and McKenzie McCullen each went deep to account for all of Queens' five runs.

Game Two: Queens 3 UNC Pembroke 1

A first inning score by UNC Pembroke put the Braves on top for the game's majority but senior starting pitcher Courtney Pearson kept them in the check the rest of the way. Pearson tossed eight innings surrendering just three hits earning her first win of the season. McCullen came up clutch in the top of the seventh knocking in a single to tie the game 1-1. The Royals' late game heroics continued in the eighth when Kelly Winter singled and Breanna Martinez capitalized on a throwing error to take the lead 2-1. Pearson pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Queens persevered to its first sweep of the season.

The Royals are back on the road for another doubleheader Saturday, February 15th in Columbus, Georgia against Albany State and Georgia Southwestern at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
