HONOLULU – The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team turned in a .241 team hitting performance, but ultimately fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-19) to No. 14 Concordia University (Calif.) on Saturday night in the final match of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational from the Stan Sheriff Center.
Concordia (5-6) hit .366 as a team and tallied seven service aces, while the Royals (4-7) struggled from the service line in the defeat committing 17 service errors.
Junior
Nic Cavallaro led the way for Queens with 12 kills hit .346 from the outside and fellow junior
Tristan Santoyo followed with seven kills. Junior middle
Cody Nix hit .364 with four kills, freshman setter
Brandon Grabow had 23 assists, and freshman libero
Guillermo Jordan led the team with six digs.
The Eagles led from start to finish in the opening set, including a 23-15 advantage before a 5-1 run by Queens cut the deficit to four points. However, a service error ended the set with Concordia in front.
Queens laid claim to an early 4-3 lead in the second frame before the Eagles used seven unanswered points to gain 10-4 edge. The Concordia lead stretched to as large as eight, 23-15, as another late Queens rally fell just short. The third and final set was again close in the early going but the Eagles pulled away late to complete the sweep.
The Royals return to action in a week and a half as they host fellow IVA member Alderson Broaddus University on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in Curry Arena.
