Royals Fall Short in Battle with No. 5 Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – The 14th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team traveled to take on No. 5 Tampa, falling 14-10 to the Spartans. The loss brings the Royals' record to 1-1 while Tampa opens their 2020 season at 1-0.
 
Laszlo Henning led the Royals offensively recording a hat trick while Kealan Pilon and Quinn Tallant each totaled three points on two goals and one assist. David Byrne and Zack Kasson chipped in with one goal and one assist apiece. In goal, Kyle Hornik tallied a career-high 18 saves in the loss.
 
Trailing just 3-2 at the close of the first quarter, Queens would fall behind 6-2 following three quick goals scored early in the second quarter by the Spartans. Henning answered for Queens cutting the margin to three with a goal at 9:33, and the two teams went on to trade goals for the remainder of the half giving the game an 8-5 score in Tampa's favor at the halftime break.
 
The Spartans then widened the gap in the third quarter outscoring Queens 4-1 to take a 12-6 advantage into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
 
Queens fought to make a comeback in the fourth outscoring the Spartans, 4-2, to close the gap to two. However, their final goal of the day would come with 2:08 to play.
 
Queens was outshot 50-33 this afternoon, putting 18 shots on goal to Tampa's 32 shots on goal. The Spartans also won the battle for ground balls, 28-13, and won 18 face-offs to Queens' seven.
 
Jack Wood of the Spartans led all on the field with five points after recording two goals and three assists. Bryan Wright led in goals with four on the day while Alexander Starr totaled seven saves in the cage.
 
Queens is back in action next Saturday, February 15 when they will face No. 17 Rollins in Savannah, Ga.
