Royals Drop Saturday Doubleheader with Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. – The Queens University of Charlotte offense went cold on Saturday afternoon as the Royals were swept in a doubleheader with Flagler College 3-2 and 2-0 at Drysdale Field.

Game One: Flagler 3, Queens 2

Flagler jumped in front early with one run in both the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead. Queens got a sacrifice fly from senior Drake Harris in the fifth inning to bring junior RJ Conner in from third and put the Royals on the scoreboard.

Redshirt-junior Mason Pickard singled to open the ninth, stole second, and later scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by redshirt-sophomore Noah Jones to even the score at 2-all. However, the Saints responded with a walk-off single in the bottom of the inning to steal the win.

Sophomore Tanner Jacobson did not factor in the decision after going eight innings on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Fellow sophomore Zach Kelly (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up the game-winning run in relief.

Conner led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored as Harris and Jones each had an RBI in the contest.

Game Two: Flagler 2, Queens 0

The final game of the day was another pitcher's dual with Flagler once again scoring first via an RBI single in the first inning. The Saints took advantage of a Queens' fielding error in the fourth to go ahead 2-0 in the contest.

Queens left five runners on base over the final five innings of play, including two in scoring position, as the Flagler pitching staff was able to keep the Royals off the scoreboard.

Redshirt-sophomore Wes Boling (0-1) got his first career start and allowed just one run on two hits in two innings of work. Freshman Jeffery Maidhof pitched four innings of relief, giving up one run one four hits with three strikeouts. Kelly and fellow sophomore Alec Hunter combined for two scoreless innings of relief out of the bullpen.

The Royals return to action on Tuesday, February 11 when they travel to Gaffney, S.C. for a 5 p.m. matchup with Limestone College.
