CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In the it's 2020 home opener, the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped a doubleheader, 2-0 and 9-7, to No. 20 University of Mount Olive on Saturday at the Tuckaseegee Dream Fields.
Game One: No. 20 Mount Olive 2, Queens 0 (Seven innings)
The Royals and Trojans were locked in a pitcher's dual in the opener, as both sides were scoreless through the opening four innings of play. Mount Olive broke the scoreless tie with a run in the fifth and added insurance with another run in the sixth to secure the series-opening victory.
Queens'
Nick Charleson (0-2) tossed six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts. Mount Olive's Hunter Stevens went the distance to earn the win, holding Queens to just four hits while recording eight strikeouts.
Junior
Nick Melton was 1-for-2 at the plate, while
RJ Conner,
Noah Jones, and
Mason Pickard each recorded a hit in the contest.
Game Two: No. 20 Mount Olive 9, Queens 7
The nightcap opened with Queens scoring three times in the first inning of play as junior
Chris Brady and sophomore
Alex Sexton drew back-to-back bases loaded walks and sophomore
Nick Brassington was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced.
A
Dominic Ford RBI single in the fourth inning moved the Royals' lead to 4-0 before the Trojans cut the deficit to one run with a three-run fifth inning. Queens got one run back in the bottom half when Brassington scored from third on a passed ball.
Ford made the score 7-3 in favor of the Royals with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, in the sixth inning.
However, Mount Olive got a two-run home run and consecutive RBI doubles in the eight to bring five runs across the plate at take an 8-7 lead. The Trojans added one more in the top of the ninth before closer Jake Isbell sat the Royals down in order in the bottom half to preserve the sweep.
Sophomore
Tanner Jacobson went five innings in his second start of the season, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts before giving way to reliever
Zach Kelly who tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Redshirt-sophomore
Wes Boling (0-2) suffered the loss after giving up one run on one hit in an inning of relief.
Ford finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI to lead the Royals' offense. Brassington was 1-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base, while Brady was 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and two walks.
The two sides square off for the season finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. from the Queen City.
