SAINT AUGUSTINE, FLA. – The Queens University of Charlotte let a late lead slip away in losing the first game a three-game series with Flagler College on Friday night. The Saints (4-0) scored two runs in the eighth inning and held on for a 2-1 win over Queens (0-5) at Drysdale Field.
Queens got a quality start from junior right-hander
Nick Charleson (0-1) who tossed 7.1 innings on the mound, allowing just two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Sophomore
Zach Kelly threw 2/3 of an inning in relief.
Offensively, the Royals' only run came in the top of the fifth when sophomore
Nick Melton drove redshirt-junior
Mason Pickard in from third for a 1-0 lead. However, Queens was held to just one hit in the game and struck out 14 times in the game facing one of the top rotations in the region.
Flagler was held in check until the eighth inning when third baseman Josh Shrouder laced a double down the left field line to bring home runners from second and third and put the Saints ahead for good.
The weekend series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at Noon. Live stats will be provided by the Flagler Athletic Communications Department.
