Balanced Attack Leads Queens Past Coker

Royals place four scorers in double figures

Highlights

CHARLOTTE, N.C.
Kristian Eanes and Tia McMillian each scored 11 points, pacing four Royals in double figures, as the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (5-16, 4-11 SAC) defeated Coker University (8-11, 5-10 SAC), 65-58, on Wednesday night at the Levine Center. Julia Raflund added 10 points and eight rebounds as Kelsey Leedle also scored 10. Caitlyn Moore followed with eight points and five steals, and Taylor Stevens scored eight points, as Queens put an end to a four-game losing streak.

The Royals jumped out to a hot start and took a 5-0 lead just over two minutes in after McMillian hit a 3-pointer from the left corner. Queens held Coker without a field goal in the game's first five minutes and ended the opening quarter with a layup by Leedle, taking a 12-point lead, 23-11, into the second quarter.

In the second, the Cobras climbed back and tied the score, 31-31, when Erin Houser stole the ball, was fouled on a fastbreak and made one of two free throws. However, moments later, on the final possession of the quarter, McMillian's 3-pointer from the top of the key gave Queens a 34-31 halftime lead.

The Royals outscored the Cobras 14-6 in the third quarter to carry a 48-37 lead into the final frame.

Queens started the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run that featured a jumper by Madison Sexton, a 3-pointer by Leedle, and a jump shot by McMillian, to seize the game's largest lead, 55-39, with 7:24 left.

Despite fouling to extend the game, Coker never pulled closer than three scores when Emily Davis connected on a jumper in the game's final seconds.

For the game, Queens shot 44.4 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the 3-point line (4-12), and 65 percent at the free-throw line (13-20). The Royals were outrebounded, 33-28, but forced 17 turnovers via nine steals.

Coker shot 40.7 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from 3-point range (3-9), and 47.8 percent at the free-throw line (11-23).

The Cobras were led by 17 points and nine rebounds by Erin Houser. Hayley Kropp scored 15 and Hope Richardson scored nine with 12 boards.

The Royals return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Tusculum University (16-5, 11-4 SAC). Opening tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the Queens Sports Network.
