Queens Drops Road Game at UNC-Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – An RBI single by Noah Jones sparked a three-run fourth inning, but the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team (0-4) fell to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (3-1), 13-3, on Tuesday night at Sammy Cox Field. Jones finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. RJ Conner also went 1-for-4 with an RBI, as the Royals were outhit 12-6.

UNCP reliever Landen Smith (2-0) earned the win, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings, while allowing just two hits and one walk, with four strikeouts.

Queens starter Nick Nelson (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs (2 ER) on five hits, three walks and a hit batter, while striking out two. The Royals used six pitchers to complete the game.

The Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Ethan Baucomm plated Trevor Clemmons on a sacrifice fly to center field, followed by a fielder's choice to shortstop by Jarratt Mobley that scored River Ryan.

UNCP added four more unearned runs in the third inning, stretching its lead to 6-0. A Queens error setup Wellington Guzman to cap the four-run frame on a two-RBI single to center field.

The Royals trimmed the deficit in the top of the fourth inning, when Jones singled up the middle scoring Dominic Ford to cut the Braves lead to 6-1. Moments later, two unearned runs scored on a fielding error by the shortstop pulling Queens within three, 6-3.

However, UNC-Pembroke scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and tacked on one more in the bottom of the eighth, to seal the 13-3 victory.

The Royals return to action on Friday evening at Flagler College in the first game of a three-game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
