CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Kristian Eanes scored 22 points with six steals but the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (5-22, 4-17 SAC) fell to Wingate University (16-12, 10-10 SAC), 56-44, on Wednesday night at the Levine Center.
Caitlyn Moore and
Madison Sexton followed with six points apiece.
On her Senior Day, Sexton hit two early 3-pointers that put Queens ahead, 9-2, with 6:48 to play in the opening frame. After a free throw by
Taylor Stevens with 11 seconds left in the quarter, the Royals held a 15-10 lead through the first 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, Wingate held Queens to just two points on a fastbreak layup by Eanes that momentarily tied the score, 17-17, with 7:40 left. The Bulldogs closed the first half on a 9-0 run, capped a Teliyah Jeter layup in the quarter's final seconds, to take a 26-17 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter,
Andrea Shire's 3-pointer with 5:14 left, pulled Queens within 11, 32-21. However Wingate stretched its third-quarter lead to as many as 14 points, 37-23, after Hannah Clark completed a three-point play with 2:13 left in the frame.
With 1:49 remaining in the game,
Kelsey Leedle's 3-pointer tightened the score, 52-44, but the Royals never pulled any closer in the closing moments.
Queens shot 38.1 percent from the field, 30 percent from the 3-point line (6-20), and 50 percent at the free-throw line (6-12).
Wingate shot 42.9 percent from the floor, 30 percent from 3 (3-10), and 55 percent at the free-throw line (11-20). The Bulldogs were led by 16 points and three blocks from Jeter, 12 from Clark, and 12 from Destiny Coleman.
