SALISBURY, N.C. –
Caitlyn Moore scored a season-high 18 points with six rebounds, but the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (5-20, 4-15 SAC) fell to regionally-ranked Catawba College (20-4, 15-4 SAC), 62-51, on Wednesday night at Goodman Gymnasium.
Kristian Eanes followed with 13 points and five rebounds as
Kelsey Leedle scored 11 points.
Queens jumped out to an eight-point first-quarter lead, 11-3, on a fastbreak layup by Eanes with 2:02 left in the frame. After allowing Catawba to take a 3-0 lead on the game's first possession 21 seconds in, the Royals held the Indians without a point for nearly nine minutes, before a 3-pointer by Lyrik Thorne ended the drought and pulled Catawba within five, 11-6, with 49 seconds remaining. Queens led 12-8 after the first quarter.
In the second, the Indians took the lead for good, 16-14, on a 3-pointer by Emily Phillips with 4:18 left in the frame. Catawba carried a 25-20 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Royals twice cut the deficit to two points, however, the Indians ended the quarter on a 5-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Taisha DeShazo with 25 seconds remaining, giving Catawba a 38-29 lead through three.
After trailing by double figures early in the fourth quarter, Queens cut the Catawba lead to seven, 51-44, on a 3 by Leedle with 2:49 to play. However, the Indians held the Royals without a field goal for nearly two minutes and used a 6-0 individual run by Madison Hallman to close out the win, leading by as many as 13 points, 57-44, with a 1:06 to go.
For the game, Queens shot 42.6 percent from the field, 40 percent from the 3-point line (4-10), and 53.8 percent from the free-throw line (7-13).
Queens held Catawba to 34.5-percent shooting, 32-percent 3-point shooting (8-25), 57.1-percent free-throw shooting (16-28). However, the Indians outrebounded the Royals, 41-29.
Catawba was led by 22 points and seven rebounds from DeShazo. Hallman scored 15 and Thorne scored 10.
