CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Despite an early lead, the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team suffered its 10
th straight loss to open the season, falling to No. 20 University of Mount Olive 8-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Tuckaseegee Dream Fields.
Queens scored first as redshirt-sophomore
Noah Jones recorded an RBI single in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead. Mount Olive evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the second as both sides remained tied through five innings of action.
However, the Trojans plated a run in the sixth to go in front by a 2-1 score before JT Stone sent a three-run home run to right center in the top of the seventh inning to extend the lead to a four-run advantage. After Queens' sophomore
Tanner Jacobson brought a run across in the bottom of the seventh, UMO scored three more times in the eighth to build an 8-2 lead that they would hold on to for the remainder of the contest.
Freshman right-hander
Jeffery Maidhof (0-2) suffered the loss on the mound after giving up two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Sophomore
Zach Kelly and redshirt-senior
Christian Huggins combined for the final four innings of relief.
At the plate, Jones was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Jacobson was 1-for-1 in a pinch hit role with an RBI of his own.
The Royals return to the road on Tuesday, February 18 against North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C.
