No. 5 Queens Handles Crusaders in Season Opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team, currently ranked fifth in the nation, had 10 different players score today as they opened their season with a commanding 23-7 win over Belmont Abbey College (0-2) in a nonconference game.
 
Leading the Royals' offense was Kara Blanchard who completed play with six goals to lead all on the field in the category. Sydney Bracken added four goals while Ally Blood and Kyleigh Masteran each notched an assist to go along with their hat tricks. Additionally, Rachel Perrett totaled four points on two goals and two assists while Taylor Quade tallied four points on one goal and three assists. In goal, Chase Brokaw secured today's win after totaling eight saves.
 
Queens quickly controlled this afternoon's game opening with three goals in the first four minutes of action. The Crusaders answered with one to cut the lead to two, 3-1, at 26:32, but a pair of back-to-back goals from the Royals widened the gap to four, 5-1. A goal from Belmont Abbey at 22:58 followed to bring the Crusaders within three but that was as close as they would get for the remainder of the game as Queens responded with four unanswered scores to lead 9-2 with 18:24. The Royals then closed the half with a 5-3 run to take a 14-5 lead into the break.
 
In the second half, Blanchard scored a goal within a minute of play to begin the running clock due to the 10 goal margin. Five more goals followed from the Royals putting them in front 20-5 by the midway point of the half and they never looked back.
 
Queens outshot the Crusaders, 40-23, putting 31 shots on goal this afternoon. The Royals also edged Belmont Abbey in ground balls, 19-17, but lost the battle at the draw, 18-14.
 
Marin Felsoci led Belmont Abbey with two goals while Kylie Eastman finished with three points on one goal and two assists. Elizabeth O'Hagan totaled four saves in the loss.
 
Queens will be back in action at home on Saturday, February 22 when they welcome Embry-Riddle University to Dickson Field. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
