NEWBERRY, S.C. – Leading after 10 minutes of play, the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (5-18, 4-13 SAC) shot just 2-for-14 from the field in the second quarter, and fell to Newberry College (13-9, 10-7 SAC), 72-51, on Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena.
Kristian Eanes led Queens with 16 points,
Julia Raflund followed with 12 and
Kelsey Leedle scored nine.
The Royals jumped out to an eight-point first-half lead when a lay-in by Raflund, back-to-back fastbreak scores by Eanes, and a paint jumper by
Caitlyn Moore, completed a 7-0 run that put Queens in front, 15-7, with 3:55 left to play in the first quarter.
However, the Wolves countered and strung together five-straight points in the closing moments of the opening quarter. Talia Roberts hit a 3, followed by an Ericka Wisely layup that trimmed the Royals' lead to two, 17-15.
In the second quarter, Newberry went on a 15-0 run to seize control, capped by a jumper by Roberts on a fastbreak that gave the Wolves a 30-19 edge with 2:12 remaining in the half. After shooting 57.1 percent in the first quarter, the Royals shot just 14.3 percent in the second.
Kristian Eanes, who scored 11-first quarter points on four of five from the field, was held 0-for-6 in the quarter as Newberry outscored Queens 21-6 in the frame. At halftime, Newberry led, 36-23.
The Wolves led the entire second half and stretched the lead to 24 points with 6:32 to go in the fourth quarter on a layup by Brandi Hall.
Queens shot 43.5 percent from the field, two of eight from 3-point range and 56.3 percent at the free-throw line (9-16).
Newberry shot 44.6 percent from the floor, 34.6 percent from the 3-point line and 92.9 percent at the free-throw line (13-14). The Wolves generated 24 points off of 17 Queens turnovers.
Kelsey McDermott led the Wolves with 16 points. Kelsey Brett followed with 12 as 10 different Newberry players scored at least two points.
Queens returns to action on Saturday versus the University of Virginia College at Wise in its annual Homecoming Game at the Levine Center. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the
