No. 10/10 Queens Hosts Rival Wingate in 2020-21 Home Opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team continues South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, December 5 against rival Wingate University in the team's home opener. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Curry Arena in Charlotte
 
Wednesday marks the 41st all-time meeting between the two schools with Queens holding a 25-15 advantage in the series. The Royals are 15-6 against the Bulldogs in the Queen City and have won the last eight games in the series dating back to the 2016-17 season. Last year, Queens swept the home-and-home series by winning 77-59 in Wingate and 86-73 inside Curry Arena.
 
Queens Athletics will allow up to 25 fans to be in attendance at all home contests scheduled to take place inside the Curry Arena for the fall 2020 calendar. Fans allowed in the building must be listed on the team's pass list located at the ticket gate and will be required to wear masks while on campus.

-Queens opened the 2020-21 season in the DC Paradise Jam last week, playing against NCAA Division I institutions Belmont University, George Mason University and Howard University.
 
-Against George Mason, the Royals fell by a 66-65 score before knocking off Howard 85-71 for their first win of the season. Queens' third game of the season was an exhibition loss to Belmont on Saturday afternoon.
 
-On Wednesday, the Queens began South Atlantic Conference play on the road against Limestone University with a 66-58 victory behind a double-double from sophomore Gavin Rains. The Trinity, N.C. native scored a career-high 20 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the win, while junior Malcolm Stevenson finished with 20 points and seven rebounds of his own as Queens held a decisive 54-31 advantage in total rebounds. The Royals grabbed 22 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points.
 
-The Royals surpassed the 20-win mark last season for the fifth straight year. The Royals have a total of 608 victories in program history since its inception in 1989-90.
 
-The Royals were ranked No. 10 overall in both the D2SIDA Media Poll and the NABC Preseason Coaches Poll . Queens finished the 2019-20 season ranked No. 15 in the final edition of the D2SIDA Media Poll and held a No. 23 ranking in the NABC Coaches Poll.
 
- Over the past five seasons, the Royals have won 142 games and have won at least 30 games in three of the last four years.
 
-The two-time reigning regional champions were picked to finish second in the South Atlantic Conference's Preseason Poll, as voted on by the League's coaches. The Royals received one of 13 first-place votes and 144 total votes to place second behind preseason favorite Lincoln Memorial University.
 
-Junior Kenny Dye and redshirt-sophomore Jamari Smith were each named to the SAC's Preseason All-Conference Team, as voted on by the League's coaches.
 
-Dye is averaging 15 points, 3.3 assists and three steals per game thus far, while Rains has been the team's primary option in the post with averages of 14 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Stevenson is the third and final Royal in double figures, averaging 12.7 points per game to go along with 6.3 rebounds per contest.
 
-Head Coach Bart Lundy is in his 13th season at Queens and 19th season overall as a collegiate head coach. Lundy boasts a 385-181 (.680) career record and is Queens' all-time winningest coach with a 289-94 (.755) mark.
 
 
Wingate Bulldogs (1-2, 1-2 SAC)

-On Wednesday night, Wingate picked up its second straight win, defeating UVA Wise 98-86 on its home floor. Jarren Cottingham scored a game-high 34 points as Wingate shot 51.6 percent from the floor and held a 50-36 scoring advantage in the paint.
 
-The Bulldogs were 13-15 overall last season and finished 9-13 in League play. However, Wingate returns its top two scorers from a year ago in Cottingham (18.2 ppg) and Francis Sio (11.2 ppg) and six of the team's top eight scorers from 2019-20.
 
-Wingate was picked to finish 7th overall in the SAC Preseason Poll with Cottingham earning Preseason All-Conference honors.
 
-Through the first four games of the year, Cottingham leads the team with 22 points per game while making 48.1 percent (13-for-27) of his 3-point attempts. Sio is second on the team with 15.8 points per game as five different Bulldogs average double figures for an offense that shooting 40.9 percent from deep.
 
-Brian Good is in his 13th season with Wingate and 26th overall as a collegiate head coach. Good sports a 330-378 (.465) career record, including a 207-154 (.572) with the Bulldogs. The Rossville, Indiana native spent four seasons in charge of the Royals program from 2004-05 to 2007-08 and compiled a 72-45 (.572) record, the fourth most wins by a head coach in Queens' history.
