CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team made a statement in its season opener on Saturday night, taking down No. 25 Limestone College 1-0 at Dickson Field. The victory is over Limestone is the first for the Royals since the 2006 season.
The first half of action saw the Saints hold a slight edge in total shots, 3-2, as senior keeper
Sebastian Kalk turned away Limestone's only real chance in the half to keep the match scoreless.
After the halftime break, both sides tallied six shots while the Royals collected five corner kicks. The final corner kick was the most important, however, as junior defender
Michael Hornsby sent a ball into the box that found the head of fellow junior
David Alvarez in the 88
th minute. The goal was the first of Alvarez's Queens career.
Kalk finished the game with two saves, collecting the first win of the season in goal and registering his seventh career shutout for the Navy and Vegas Gold.
The 2019 season rolls on for Queens next Wednesday, September 11 as the team travels to Due West, S.C. for a regional matchup with Erskine College at 7:30 p.m.
