CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team welcomed the three-time defending national champion Shippensburg Raiders to Bessant Field this afternoon for a nonconference game falling 3-1. The Royals now sit 1-1 following their opening weekend of competition while No. 1 Shippensburg improves to 2-0 on the year.
The Royals were outshot 19-12 putting four shots on goal to Shippensburg's 14 shots on frame.
Jill Sherman and
Maya Forbes led the Royals on offense with three shots each as Sherman scored Queens' lone goal of the day. In the cage,
Avian Thompson totaled nine saves in 60 minutes of play.
Carey Karl and
Ellie Fitzgerald also recorded one defensive save each.
After finding themselves trailing 2-0 at the end of the opening quarter of action, Queens closed the gap to one in the second with a goal from Sherman scored off of a penalty corner in the 21
st minute. The Raiders then found an insurance goal in the third as Rosalia Cappadora poked in a loose ball in front of the cage to secure the win over the Royals.
The Raiders were led by 2018 national player of the year Jazmin Petrantonio who recorded one goal and one assist today. Jenna Sluymer and Cappadora each added one goal. Megan Lay recorded three saves in goal.
Queens is back in action on Thursday, September 12 on the road at Belmont Abbey College. The South Atlantic Conference Carolinas opener is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
