CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte men's rugby team (2-0) continued its high-scoring trend Saturday afternoon, as the Royals shut-out Virginia Military Institute 107-0 on Dickson Field at the Queens Sports Complex.
The Royals were led by
Rylee Ellsworth and
Doyle Hedgepeth as both men recorded three tries each in the win. Seniors
Anthony Burton and
Benjamin Clipstone and freshman
Dominic Tianga each scored two tries for Queens, while five more Royals,
Jacob Morris,
Benji Hund,
Jharid Morrison,
Thomas Keay, and
Raitavius Whitner, added one try each to the board.
Freshman
Carson Green also recorded a season-high 11 conversions in the defeat over the Keydets.
Queens started scoring early with a quick try from Ellsworth just 40 seconds into play and another from Tianga, who was followed by a Green conversion, to make the score 12-0 over VMI.
Ellsworth would tally two more tries next for the Royals, along with another conversion from Green to increase their lead to 24 (24-0).
Before half time, Clipstone, Morris, Burton, and Hund would each add one try to the board with three more conversions from Green to make the score 50-0.
The scoring didn't stop for the Royals in the second half as junior Morrison added one try to start the half, along with tries from Keay and Hedgepeth, making the score 65-0. Green would also tally two more conversions (69-0).
Next, Burton and Hedgepeth added one more try each to the board, with another Green conversion, to make the score 81-0.
At the 12-minute mark, Clipstone scored his second try of the day and Green recorded another conversion (88-0). Both Tianga and Whitner added another try each next increasing the Royals' lead to 98-0.
Green would record his last two conversions along with Hedgepeth's third try of the day during the final minutes of play to make the final score 107-0 over the Keydets.
Up next, the Royals will host their family weekend event where they'll battle Virginia Commonwealth University in another non-conference match Saturday, September 28. Play will begin following the women's match at 1 p.m.
