CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a matchup of the top two teams in the South Atlantic Conference, the No. 25 Wingate University Bulldogs got the best of the Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team by a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-22) score inside Curry Arena on the team's annual Youth Volleyball Night.
 
The Royals (6-2, 3-1 SAC) held Wingate below its season hitting average, but struggle on the back line as the Bulldogs (9-0, 4-0 SAC) collected eight service aces on the night. The teams were even with seven total blocks apiece, but Wingate registered a 46-26 advantage in the kills column.
 
After Wingate gained a 1-0 lead in the first set behind a .282 hitting performance, Queens responded with an 8-4 run to open the second frame. The lead grew to as large as 17-12 on a kill from freshman Anna McLain, but the Bulldogs rattled off four straight points to cut the deficit to one point.
 
Queens held on for a 20-18 edge before Wingate used five unanswered points to gain a 22-20 lead on a Treslyn Ortiz service ace. Despite the Royals tying the score at 23-all, Wingate ended the set with consecutive points to take a 2-0 match lead.
 
The Royals once again got out to an early lead in the third set of action, but a 6-0 run gave the Bulldogs a lead the never relinquished in completing the sweep.
 
Junior Jordan Proszenyak led the Royals with nine kills and hit .296 to go along with seven digs, while fellow junior Chanel Turner followed with seven kills and a.238 hitting mark of her own. Senior Mallory Swarts tallied 22 assists from her setter position.
 
Queens ends the weekend tomorrow when the team hosts Coker University at 2 p.m. inside the Levine Center.
