Mount Olive, N.C.– After putting five points on the board in the opening half of field hockey action today, the Queens University of Charlotte Royals ran away with a 7-1 road win over Mount Olive. The South Atlantic Conference Carolinas win moves Queens (3-2) to 2-1 in conference play while Trojans fall to 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in the league.
The Royals were in control offensively the entire game this afternoon outshooting the Trojans 40-5 to put 17 shots on goal. Queens also earned 25 penalty corners taking advantage of five to score.
Hanna Nechay led with two goals as
Maya Forbes,
Millie Eaton-Jones,
Mazvita Mtisi,
Sta'sha Waterfield, and
Gabe Lechner each scored one.
Maha Clarke totaled two assists while
Molly Walter, Forbes, Mtisi, and Lechner tallied one apiece.
The Royals quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter before allowing the Trojans to score their lone goal of the game in the second. Another goal from Queens just before the break put the Royals on top 5-1 heading into the halftime break.
Both teams would go scoreless in the third before Queens found the back of the cage twice more in the final 10 minutes of play to give the game its final score, 7-1.
Marit Noordam got the start in goal today playing the opening half before
Avian Thompson took over in the second. The two combined for three saves.
Delaney Norr scored Mount Olive's one goal of the day while Victoria Lane made 10 saves in goal.
The Royals are back at home on Bessant Field on Sunday, September 22. They will take on No. 10 Limestone at noon. It will be the first time the two teams have met since the conference championship game a season ago where the Royals were edged 3-2.
