FLORENCE, S.C. -- The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team (2-1) blanked Francis Marion University through the first two periods of regulation, plus the first overtime period, but in the end, it was the Patriots that netted the first and only goal of the game, as the score in the second overtime period gave the Royals their first loss of the season, 1-0, from Hartzler Field in Florence, S.C.
Francis Marion took 20 shots in the match and put seven on target, but it was not until the 107:53 mark, in double overtime, that it converted for the first time to give the Patriots the home win. For Queens, it was the first loss of the season after beginning the 2019 campaign at 2-0, including a top-25 win over No. 25 Limestone.
The Royals finished with 11 total shots, five of which went on goal, led by sophomore
Jaden McCane with two.
Michael Hornsby put his only shot on goal, while
Louis Goldsack led Queens with three shots on the night.
Ben Cohen added two shots.
Saturday's match was the second for Queens in a stretch of four consecutive road games. Next up, the Royals open conference play when they travel to Salisbury, N.C. to face off against Catawba College on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
