Royals Knock Off Top-Seeded Spartans to Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

TAMPA, Fla.  – The 10th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team defeated third-ranked University of Tampa, 16-15, this afternoon to advance to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse Championship for the third time in four years. Queens moves on as the fourth seed with a 18-2 record extending its win streak to 15 while the top-seeded Spartans close the year at 14-5.
 
South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year Ally Blood led the Royals with seven points while Kara Blanchard and Hanna Scott each added four goals and one assist for five points. Rachel Perrett also totaled five points recording two goals and three assists and Kyleigh Masteran added two goals. Katie Wardle chipped in with one assist and one goal. In the cage, Chase Brokaw recorded 14 saves, five ground balls, and one caused turnover.
 
Despite scoring the first goal of the day just 30 seconds into play to take a 1-0 lead, Queens would trail 4-1 at 21:02 following four unanswered goals scored by the Spartans. Soon after, back-to-back goals from the Royals' Perrett sparked a 4-0 run for Queens that put them back on top, 5-4, but the lead would be short-lived as a 7-1 run by Tampa put the home team back on top, 11-6, with 4:08 left in the half.
 
With 3:14 left in the period, Queens' Blood found the back of the net to start a 5-0 run that would help the Royals close the half tied, 11-11, with Tampa. Blood recorded two goals and two assists during the run.
 
In the second half, a goal from the Royals' Scott at 28:53 gave the Royals control of the game once again. A goal from the Spartans' Maggie Gladden equalized things once again, but two goals from Queens followed to give the Royals the lead for good despite the Spartans pulling within one on two different occasions.
 
The Royals totaled 27 shots this afternoon putting 24 shots on goal while Tampa totaled 29 shots on goal on 49 shot attempts. Queens won the battle at the draw, 19-15, but totaled just 17 ground balls to Tampa's 27 ground balls.
 
Carly Vaccaro led the Spartans with seven points on five goals and two assists. Gladden added a hat trick while Kristyn Staley totaled two goals and one assist. In goal, Bridget Sutter totaled eight saves, five ground balls, and one assist.
 
Sunday's quarterfinal game will take place at noon at Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex on the campus of Tampa. The Royals will face either second-seeded Florida Southern or third-seeded Rollins.
 
The winner will advance to the semifinals which will be conducted on Friday, May 17. The championship final is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 19. The semifinal and final rounds of the championship will be co-hosted by Grand Valley State University and the West Michigan Sports Commission, in Allendale, Michigan.
