WINGATE, N.C. – The 10
th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte Royals won their sixth consecutive South Atlantic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship this afternoon defeating Lenoir-Rhyne 22-8 at Graham Gill Field on the campus of Wingate University. The win improves the Royals' record to 17-2 on the year and extends Queens' win streak to 14 which is a new program record.
Queens started today's game hot scoring eight unanswered goals in the opening 10 minutes of play. Lenoir-Rhyne would cut into the Royals' lead with four straight goals but Queens answered stringing together a couple of 3-0 runs to take a 14-5 lead into the halftime break.
In the second, Lenoir-Rhyne's Gia Columbo struck first but a 4-0 spurt from Queens followed enforcing the running clock rule. The Royals then outscored the Bears 4-2 in the remaining minutes of play to secure the 14-point win.
Queens outshot Lenoir-Rhyne, 34-26, putting 27 shots on goal. However, the Royals lost the battle at the draw, 17-15, with
Sydney Hussey totaling eight. They were also edged in ground balls, 18-17.
Ally Blood led the Royals in points today with seven after tallying four goals and three assists. Her second goal of the day marked her 100
th career goal.
Kara Blanchard led in goals with five. She also had one assist to finish with six points.
Hanna Scott also recorded six points after recording a hat trick and three assists.
Katie Wardle had five points on four goals and one assist and
Rachel Perrett had four points on three goals and one assist.
Sydney Bracken added two goals and two assists for four points while
Taylor Quade notched the remaining two points on one goal and one assist.
Following the game, Blanchard, Blood, Hussey, Wardle,
Chase Brokaw, and
Maggie Fabean were named to the all-tournament team. Additionally, Brokaw was named MVP after totaling seven saves today. She completed Friday's game with five saves.
Columbo led the Bears with four goals today while Rachel Elmore finished with three goals and an assist for four points.
The NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse selection show is scheduled to air on Sunday, May 5 on
NCAA.com at 8:30 p.m. Queens is currently ranked fourth in the South Region.
