CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The 14
th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team fell 11-9 at home to No. 15 Wingate in their regular season finale. The loss wraps the Royals' league record at 6-2 while their overall record moves to 11-3. The Bulldogs complete the regular season at 7-1 in the league and 11-3 overall.
In the first quarter, both teams traded goals early to give the game a 1-1 tie until a late goal with 13 seconds on the clock from Queens'
A.J. Curtiss put the Royals in front 2-1 heading in to the second.
Wingate then scored the first two goals in the second period to grab a 3-2 lead with 5:24 on the clock. However, their lead would be short-lived as the Royals responded with a pair of unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead into the halftime break.
In the third, Wingate's Conor Gronbach struck first to knot the game at 4-4, but Queens'
Kealan Pilon responded soon after sparking a 3-0 run that put the Royals on top, 7-4, with 9:46 left in the period. Wingate then rattled off three goals in a row to equalize the game at 7-7 heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
Wingate's run continued into the fourth where they opened with back-to-back goals to lead 9-7 with 11:02 left in regulation. Queens'
Kevin Barry and
Eric Fitz answered with two to tie things back up, 9-9, with two minutes left to play but their goals would be the last for the home team as the Bulldogs' Sean Moran found the game winner at 1:27. An insurance goal soon followed for Wingate to give them the upset win over the Royals.
Pilon led the Royals with four points on two goals and two assists. Barry added two goals while
Laszlo Henning added two assists.
Reed Murphy recorded two points on one goal and one assist. In goal,
Anthony Valenza completed play with 14 saves.
Queens was edged, 40-39, in shots this evening putting 21 shots on goal compared to Wingate's 25 shots on frame. Both teams totaled 21 ground balls while the Bulldogs edged the battle in the circle winning 12-of-23 face-offs.
The Bulldogs were led by Alex Llerandi who recorded a hat trick. Ryan Ormerod and Bobby Padden added three points each on two goals and one assist while Gronbach and Dominic Piazza each totaled one goal and one assist. In goal, Alex Cordero recorded 11 saves.
