MARION, N.C. – Eleven total errors across two games led to back-to-back losses for the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team on Monday evening as the Royals fell by scores of 11-2 and 3-0 to Carson-Newman University at Big League Camp.
The three-game sweep at the hands of Carson-Newman (27-17, 9-11 SAC) marks just the third series sweep of the season for Queens (12-28, 4-17 SAC) as the Royals home schedule comes to a close.
Game One: Carson-Newman 11, Queens 2
The Royals committed seven costly errors in the first game of the day leading to seven unearned runs for the Eagles. The first inning of play saw Carson-Newman bring five runs across the plate to build a 5-0 lead, an advantage that stood until the Eagles added four more runs in the fourth inning.
A sacrifice fly by freshman
Nick Melton brought Queens' first run across the board in the bottom half of the fourth. Melton drove in both runs for the Royals, collecting an RBI single in the ninth but a groundout stranded two base runners and ended the game.
Freshman right-hander
Tanner Jacobson (2-1) suffered the loss after squandering nine runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts across five innings. Sophomore
Madisyn Bolin tallied four strikeouts in three innings out of the bullpen, while freshman
Landen Wright finished off the final inning of relief.
Melton finished 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while redshirt-sophomore
Dominic Ford was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Redshirt-freshmen
Noah Jones and
Anthony Orta each had a double and scored a run.
Game Two: Carson-Newman 3, Queens 0 (Seven inn.)
Queens got a stellar pitching performance from another freshman in game two as right-hander
Daniel Bagwell (0-2) tossed a complete game in his first career start. Bagwell allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts.
The Eagles did all of their damage early in the contest, scoring twice in the first inning and once more in the third to build a 3-0 lead.
Bagwell left the bases loaded in the sixth inning, forcing consecutive pop ups and a ground out to get out of a jam. Carson-Newman threatened once more in the top of the seventh with runners on first and second, but Mark Treadway was thrown out at home trying to score from second on a wild pitch.
The Royals drew back-to-back walks with two outs in the bottom of the seventh looking to start a rally before a strikeout kept the CNU shutout intact.
Six different Royals registered a hit in the contest, led by redshirt-freshman
Austin Campbell who was 1-for-2 at the plate.
Queens begins a four-game road trip tomorrow when they travel to Laurinburg, N.C. for a non-conference matchup with St. Andrews University at 3 p.m.
