MARION, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped a South Atlantic Conference matchup with Carson-Newman University on Saturday night, falling 12-2 at Big League Camp. The team honored is four-member senior class of
Jack Bergren,
Max Fries,
Chase Hager, and
Kollin Schrenk in a pre-game ceremony.
"These student-athletes took a giant leap of faith in transferring into a start up program, and for all of us involved it was and is greatly appreciated," said Head Baseball Coach
Jack McDowell. "We couldn't have asked for a better combination of athletes and leaders to set the stage for this young program and they will be greatly missed. Here's to THE ORIGINALS!"
Carson-Newman got on the board first with six runs in the first two innings, including a five-run fifth, to claim an early lead. Both sides remained scoreless for the next three innings until the Eagles brought three runs across in the top of the sixth to extend their advantage to a 9-0 margin.
Three more runs in the seventh moved the Eagles' lead to double digits before Queens scored its first run of the game on an RBI single from redshirt-freshman
Noah Jones in the eighth inning. The Royals got their final run of the game in the ninth inning on an RBI double from redshirt-sophomore
Dominic Ford.
CNU starter Greg Valentine (8-2) tossed eight innings to earn the win, striking out a career-high 12 batters on 118 total pitches.
The Royals used three pitchers on the mound, including Bergren who allowed just one run on three hits with five strikeouts across 2.2 innings of relief.
Jones finished 2-for-5 with an RBI, while freshman
Alex Sexton was also 2-for-4 at the plate. Ford tallied two doubles and an RBI in the contest.
Queens and Carson-Newman will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Monday, April 15 at Big League Camp starting at 4:30 p.m.
