GAFFNEY, S.C. – With the game tied 11-11, Queens University of Charlotte's
Hanna Scott found the back of the net on a free-position shot at 3:51 to score today's game-winner over No. 10 Limestone College. The 14-11 win is the 13
th-ranked Royals' 10
th in a row and improves their overall record to 13-2. It is also the first road win over the Saints in program history for Queens in women's lacrosse.
This afternoon's tightly contested south region battle saw its fifth tie of the game when the Saints took advantage of a man-up opportunity and went on a 3-0 run to equalize things at 11-11 with 7:26 to play. Later, a foul by the Saints which left them a man down allowed Scott to step up and score the game-winner. At 3:05,
Kyleigh Masteran netted an insurance goal and another one followed by Scott with 25-seconds to play to really solidify the victory on the road.
Scott along with
Rachel Perrett led the Royals' offense today as each totaled four points on three goals and one assist.
Katie Wardle added three points with a pair of goals and one assist while
Taylor Quade and
Kara Blanchard both totaled three points on one goal and two assists. Masteran also completed play with two goals. In goal,
Chase Brokaw collected the win after totaling 10 saves in 60 minutes of action.
Queens opened today's game hot building a 4-1 lead before a scoring drought allowed the Saints to score three unanswered goals to tie the game at 4-4 with 8:25 left in the first half. Wardle would end the Royals' drought with a goal assisted by Blanchard at 3:51, but the Saints answered with a goal of their own at 1:23 to give the game a 5-5 score at the halftime break.
Queens was outshot 34-32 by the Saints, though they would put 26 shots on goal compared to Limestone's 21 shots on goal. Additionally, Queens lost the battle for ground balls narrowly, 25-22, but won the battle at the draw 18-9 with
Sydney Hussey securing nine and
Sydney Bracken totaling six.
The Saints were led by Courtney Lafler who finished the game with four goals and three assists for seven points. Britannie Ouimet added a hat trick and Abby Hope chipped in with two goals. Defensively, Rose Blackburn led with five caused turnovers and Teja Gallop finished in the cage with 12 saves.
The Royals now have four program wins over the Saints. Additionally, Queens never trailed despite the game seeing five ties.
Queens will be back in action at home in another nonconference game on Thursday, April 18 against No. 23 Mount Olive at 4 p.m.
