No. 24 Queens Upsets No. 7 North Georgia in Regional Showdown

DAHLONEGA, GA. – The No. 24 Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team earned a 6-1 upset of No. 7 University of North Georgia in a southeast region showdown on Sunday at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.

"I couldn't be more proud of this team. We had great energy throughout the match and I really think that was the difference in the end," said Head Coach Billy Boykin. "We competed well and played with an exuberance that was exciting to watch. Our overall team effort today was terrific."

Queens was able to go ahead early in the match, winning of two of three doubles matches beginning with a 7-5 win at No. 2 from the duo of Sebastian Meum and Kasper Rolfsen. The No. 1 tandem of Paolo Bompieri and Joel Dunlap secured a 7-5 win of their own to give the Royals a 1-0 match lead.

Singles play saw Queens take down two ranked individuals as Dunlap put the team back in front with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over the nation's 74th-ranked singles player. Junior Agustin Aran Martin, ranked No. 45 overall, pulled an upset of his own with a 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 1 over the 33rd-ranked singles player.

"Joel fought back from a set down to put the second point on the board," commented Boykin. "He beat a really good player and gave us a big lift which was huge."

Senior Mathias Degardin gave the Royals the victory with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 triumph at No. 3, while Meum and Rolfsen finished off singles play with 8-2 and 8-5 wins, respectively.

"Mathias and Agustin were also really good for us today. They led the way with strong play in singles," Boykin continued. "This was a good team win and we'll enjoy it, but we'll need to recover quickly because we have a big SAC match on Wednesday."

The Royals return to South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, March 27 when the team hosts No. 35 Tusculum University at 1 p.m. from the Howard Levine Tennis Center.
