CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team set a program record for hitting percentage in a single match, hitting .368 against Alderson Broaddus University, and earned a sweep of Bluefield College and ABU in a Friday tri-match at the Levine Center.
Game One: Queens 3, Bluefield College 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21)
The Royals began the day with a win over the Rams in straight sets, thanks in large part to a .279 hitting percentage in the match. Queens was dominant on the defensive side of play as well, recording 10 blocks at the net, including five from sophomore
Cody Nix.
Queens opened the first set slowly, hitting just .111 on offense but forced the Rams into 10 attack errors to secure the win. A 6-1 run began the second set of action as the Royals tallied a .321 team hitting percentage to go up 2-0 in the match.
The two sides traded points for much of the third set of play before the Royals used six unanswered points to build an 18-13 lead that eventually extended to 23-17 on a kill from Nix. Bluefield scored four of the next five points, but a service error gave Queens the home victory.
Sophomore outside
Tristan Santoyo led the Royals with 11 kills and hit .333, while Nix and fellow sophomore
Josh Bragg recorded six kills each and hit .462 and .400, respectively. Sophomore setter
Jack Mitchner guided the offense with 22 assists in his first start of the year.
Game Two: Queens 3, Alderson Broaddus 0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-13)
Queens carried momentum into the nightcap of Friday's tri-match, taking care of Independent Volleyball Association foe Alderson Broaddus in straight sets thanks in large part to the program record hitting percentage and 10 service aces.
The Royals trailed just three times in the entire match and cruised to one of the team's most dominant performances in its two-year history.
Sophomore middle
JP Payne registered 10 kills and a .562 hitting marks to go along with three total blocks, while fellow sophomore
Nic Cavallaro followed with eight kills of his own. Freshman
Caden Frye tallied six kills, seven digs and three service aces.
Another sophomore middle,
Aleksandar Perisic, recorded five kills and a .500 hitting percentage and sophomore
Brian Ford came off of the bench to tally four kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Senior
Alexander Schinzing had 26 assists and six digs, while sophomore
Ruben Greenstein led the team with eight digs.
The Royals welcome fellow IVA member Coker College to Curry Arena on Tuesday, March 26 for their next match at 7 p.m.
