Queens Falls to Lincoln Memorial in Series Opener

HARROGATE, TENN. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team had its two-game winning streak snapped on Friday, falling 12-5 to Lincoln Memorial University at Hennon Field in the opener of a three-game South Atlantic Conference series.

The Railsplitter (22-8), ranked in the latest NCBWA Southeast Region Top 10, got out to an early lead by scoring four runs across the opening two innings of play. Queens got on the board with a solo home run from redshirt-freshman Noah Jones in the top of the fourth, but Lincoln Memorial responded with three runs of their own in the home half to extend their advantage to 7-1.

In the fifth, redshirt-junior Chase Hager drew a one-out walk and later scored on a two-run home run from freshman Alex Sexton. However, the Railsplitters answered once again with two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to increase their lead to a 12-3 margin.

Queens got two more runs across the plate in the eighth, scoring on a solo home run from redshirt-sophomore Dominic Ford and an RBI from freshman Rusty Nicholson but LMU shut the door in the ninth to preserve the win.

Freshman right-hander Zach Kelly (1-4) took the loss after giving up nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits with five walks and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings on the mound. Freshman Alex Hunter tossed 1.1 innings of relief, while redshirt-sophomore Madisyn Bolin made his first appearance for Queens, striking out two batters in one inning out of the bullpen.

Jones finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. Ford was 2-for-5 with a home run, while freshman Nick Brassington was also 2-for-4 with a double in the contest.

The three-game series comes to a close tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
