Royals Roll Past Winston-Salem State, Pick Up Second Straight Win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team collected its second straight win on Wednesday night, defeating Winston-Salem State University 8-3 at BB&T Ballpark.

Queens (7-18) got the scoring started early with two runs in the second inning when freshman Tanner Jacobson drove in a runner and redshirt-junior Chase Hager scored from third on a balk.

The Royals added another run in the third with an RBI from redshirt-junior Ryan Dudney before the Rams (16-10) scored three runs of their own in the third and fourth innings to even the score at 3-all.

Redshirt-freshman Anthony Orta provided the go-ahead run as he led off the sixth inning with a solo home run, his first of the year. Hager scored his second run of the game on a passed ball as the Royals provided insurance runs in the seventh and ninth innings to secure the win.

Redshirt-junior Jack Bergren (3-3) evened his season record with a quality start, allowing just three runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. Freshman Daniel Bagwell made his eighth relief appearance of the season, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out two batters.

Orta finished the contest 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored, while Hager scored two runs of his own and tallied an RBI. Jacobson and fellow freshmen Nick Melton and Rusty Nicholson were all 2-for-4 at the plate as even different Royals registered a hit.

Queens returns to South Atlantic Conference play over the weekend, travelling to Harrogate, Tenn. for a three-game series with Lincoln Memorial University. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
