GAFFNEY, S.C. – The 17
th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team traveled to No. 3 Limestone College this afternoon looking for a second-straight win over the Saints after upsetting them last season. However, the Royals would come up short falling 10-9 to pick up their first loss of the season. Limestone remains undefeated on the year at 5-0 after the win.
Quinn Tallant led the Royals with four points on three goals and one assist.
Kealan Pilon and
Matthew Cameron each had two points on one goal and one assist. On the defensive end,
Jake Coleman had seven ground balls and
Cody Kicsak had two caused turnovers. In goal,
Kyle Hornik recorded 13 saves and 10 ground balls.
Finding the back of the net just twice in the opening half, Queens found itself trailing the Saints 5-2 at the break. Queens then fell behind by as much as five on two occasions before Pilon and Cameron scored back-to-back goals at the end of the third to help the Royals pull back within three, 9-6, heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
In the fourth, Limestone's Clark Walter scored at 14:02 to increase the home team's lead to four, 10-6. The Royals then responded with three consecutive goals to close the gap to one, 10-9, with 42 seconds to play. Queens would see one more chance to tie the game and force overtime after winning the subsequent faceoff, but the final shot attempt would go wide as time expired.
Queens was outshot 40-33, putting 21 shots on goal to Limestone's 23 shots on frame. The Saints also totaled 34 ground balls to Queens' 31.
The Saints were led by Tyler Papa who totaled four goals. Matt Bennett and Jeremy Burns added two goals each. Danny Forren collected the win in goal after totaling 12 saves.
Queens will be back in action on Wednesday, March 6 when they host Palm Beach Atlantic University at Dickson Field. Play is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
