CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Shaun Willett scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, as the top-seeded Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (31-5, 19-1 SAC) defeated second-seeded Augusta University (28-6, 19-3 PBC), 91-78, on Tuesday night at the Levine Center to win the Southeast Regional Championship Game. With the win, the Royals claimed their second consecutive regional title, and fourth total, to advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship.
Jermaine Patterson followed with 12 points, while
Daniel Carr and
Lewis Diankulu each scored 11. Willett was named Tournament MVP, while Carr and Diankulu were named to the All-Tournament Team.
After a back-and-forth first half in which neither side led by more than one score for the opening 12 minutes, a Diankulu lay-in gave the Royals a three-score lead, 27-20, with 7:20 left until halftime. Queens led 39-38 at the break.
In the second half, Queens led 55-52 with 13:54 remaining, before going on a 6-0 run, capped by a Carr layup that put the Royals ahead, 63-54, with 11:42 to play.
The run stretched to an 11-2 outburst after back-to-back dunks by
Kevion Blaylock and
Jachai Taylor that gave Queens a double-figure edge, 67-56, with 10:06 left.
The Royals led by at least two scores the rest of the way, and took their largest lead of the game, 91-76, with 16 seconds left after two made free throws by Willett.
In total, Queens shot 49.3 percent from the floor and 31.3 percent from the 3-point line. The Royals held the Jaguars to 46.8-percent shooting and 29.2 percent from the beyond the arc. Queens committed just eight turnovers while forcing Augusta into 12 turnovers, and outrebounded the Jaguars 42-29.
Augusta was led by 25 points, eight rebounds and nine blocks from Deane Williams.
After reseeding by the NCAA selection committee, Queens earned the No. 3 seed of the eight advancing regional champions. The Royals will meet No. 6-seed Point Loma Nazarene University in the national quarterfinals on Wednesday, Mar. 27, at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.
