EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
Shaun Willett recorded his 27
th double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds, but the third-seeded Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (31-5, 19-1 SAC) fell to sixth-seeded Point Loma Nazarene University (30-4, 20-2 PacWest), 87-74, on Wednesday night in the national quarterfinals at the Ford Center.
Daniel Carr followed with 11 points, while
Lewis Diankulu and
Kenny Dye scored 10 apiece.
With the scored tied 14-14, with 14:38 to play in the first half, Point Loma went on a 13-0 run, capped by a Brock Mackenzie jumper that put the Sea Lions ahead, 27-14, with 8:20 to play in the first.
After the Royals momentarily cut the deficit to single digits, Daulton Hommes connected on a jumper in the paint with 36 seconds left in the half that put the Sea Lions ahead 40-29 at halftime.
In the second half, Queens used a 7-0 spurt to cut the deficit to two scores, 49-44, after a layup by Willett with 15:35 to play. The Royals further cut into the margin, and trailed just 59-57 after
Jermaine Patterson's lay-in with 9:02 left.
However, moments later, Hommes answered with a 3-pointer for Point Loma, giving the Sea Lions a 62-57 lead. Point Loma finished hot, connecting on its final five field goal attempts, and stretching the lead to as many as 15 points, 85-70, in the final minute.
The Sea Lions shot 54.1 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from the 3-point line, while holding the Royals to just 43.5-percent shooting and 21.7 percent from distance. Daulton Hommes and Preston Beverly led Point Loma with 22 points each.
Queens finishes the season with a 31-5 record, accumulating the second-most wins in a season in program history, and the fourth-best winning percentage (.861 win pct.).
