KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team got back into the win column on Tuesday night, collecting a 6-5 win over the Bulldogs of Barton College at Intimidators Stadium. Redshirt-freshman
Anthony Orta came up with a crucial at-bat in the bottom of the ninth to provide the walk-off win for the Royals.
The Bulldogs, ranked in the NCBWA Southeast Region Top 10 Rankings for the past three weeks, fell to 19-12 overall. Queens improved to 6-18 on the season after tallying their second walk-off win of the season.
Barton sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring twice for an early 2-0 advantage. Queens got on the board in the fourth inning as redshirt-freshman
Noah Jones singled and later stole third before scoring on a Barton throwing error.
Freshman right-hander
Jake Michna kept the Barton offense at bay with four scoreless innings of relief, including getting out a bases loaded jam in the fourth, to keep the deficit at just one run. Michna recorded a career-high five strikeouts without a walk.
Queens took advantage of the strong relief efforts of Michna and gained the lead for the first time with a four-run sixth inning. Freshman
Tanner Jacobson gave Queens the lead with a one-out RBI single that scored two runs before scoring himself on a sacrifice fly from redshirt-junior
Chase Hager. The Royals' final run of the inning came on an RBI single from freshman
Nick Brassington that scored Orta from second.
The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to even the score at 5-all. Barton got runners at first and second with one-out in the top of the ninth, but redshirt-sophomore second baseman
Dominic Ford turned an unassisted double play to keep the Queens rally hopes alive.
Freshman
Nick Melton led off the home half of the ninth with a single before advancing to second on a groundout. With two outs and two runners on, Orta put the first pitch he saw in play as the ball went between the legs of Barton's shortstop Shawn Harrison, allowing Melton to score the game-winning run.
Redshirt-junior
Kollin Schrenk got the start on the mound for Queens but did not factor in the decision after going just two innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
Michna, redshirt-freshman
Wes Boling, and freshman
Evan Dix each appeared out of the bullpen, while Jacobson (1-0) moved to the mound in the ninth and earned his first career win.
Orta finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Jones led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance, scoring two runs and stealing a base. Brassington was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Hager was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
The Royals have a quick turnaround as the begin a five-game road trip tomorrow with a trip to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on Winston-Salem State University at 6 p.m.
