Men’s Volleyball Competes With No. 2 Hawaii

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team hosted its second ranked opponent of the season, falling to No. 2 University of Hawaii 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-16) on Thursday night inside Curry Arena.

The Royals (2-8) were unable to get past the noticeable size of the Rainbow Warriors (6-0) who collected 11 total blocks and hit .458 as a team. Hawaii's Filip Humer led all players with 10 kills and hit .500 in two sets off of the bench.

After an early tie in the first set, Queens trailed by just three points before an 11-3 run by Hawaii opened the lead to double digits. Hawaii scored three of next five points to end the set and claim a 1-0 lead.

A kill from sophomore Tristan Santoyo and a Hawaii attacking error gave Queens a 4-3 lead early in the second frame before Hawaii responded with a 6-1 lead to force a Queens timeout. The Royals kept the set close, cutting the deficit back to a three-point margin following a double block from Santoyo and fellow sophomore Cody Nix.

Hawaii rattled off four straight points to end the second set and go up 2-0 in the match, carrying momentum into the third set and getting out to a 5-1 lead.

The Rainbow Warriors' largest lead of the set came at 22-12, to once again force a Queens timeout. The Royals outscored Hawaii 4-3 after the stoppage, but the UH lead was too much to overcome.

Santoyo finished with seven kills in the match, while sophomore Nic Cavallaro led all Royals with eight kills from the right side. Sophomore transfer Josh Bragg totaled five kills and a .300 hitting percentage to go along with four digs, as senior setter Alexander Schinzing tallied 25 assists.

The Royals and Rainbow Warriors meet again on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Curry Arena as a part of the University's Homecoming Weekend. Admission for the event is free for all fans.
