WINGATE, N.C. - With 1.2 seconds left in regulation, Van Turner Jr.'s 3-pointer tied the score and sent the game to overtime, as the No.9/9 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (26-3 18-1 SAC) prevailed in the extra session, 99-91, over Wingate University (16-11 12-7 SAC) on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. Kenny Dye led Queens with a career-high 31 points, Shaun Willett followed with 23 points and 16 rebounds to record his 23rd double-double of the season, and Daniel Carr tied a single-game program record with 14 assists to go along with nine rebounds.
Willett made history early in the first half when with his third rebound of the game he recorded his 336th board of the season, breaking a program record for rebounds in a single season. The previous mark of 335 was set by Soce Faye in 1997-1998.
Queens opened up a 15-point lead with 2:05 left to play in the first half when Willett completed a three-point play to give the Royals a 44-29 lead. Queens carried a 10-point lead into halftime, 46-36.
To open the second half, Wingate tied the score, 47-47, after using an 11-1 run to start the frame capped by a Jakob Dawkins jumper with 17:31 left to play. Dawkins led four Bulldogs in double figures with 21 points.
Wingate caught fire in the second half, shooting 57.6 percent from the floor and 46.2 percent from beyond the arc, and found itself in front, 83-78, with 1:34 left in regulation.
Queens pulled within one, 83-82, with 45 seconds left, when a blocked jump shot by Dye led to a fastbreak layup by Willett. After allowing an offensive rebound on the ensuing possession and fouling Jarren Cottingham with nine seconds remaining, Cottingham hit both free throws to give Wingate an 85-82 advantage.
Turner's 3-pointer from the right wing tied the game moments later. He finished with 12 points.
The Royals opened overtime with a layup by Lewis Diankulu, followed by jumpers from Dye and Diankulu that resulted in a 6-1 run, to give Queens a 91-86 edge with 3:28 remaining. Dye scored nine points in the extra session, as the Royals led the rest of the way.
In total, Queens outrebounded Wingate 46-34, shot 55.2 percent from the field, and 45.8 percent from the 3-point line. The Royals totaled 25 assists on 37 made field goals and turned the ball over 18 times while only forcing eight turnovers.
The Bulldogs shot 44.2 percent from the field and 38.7 percent from the 3-point line. Cottingham scored 19 points with eight assists. Marco Haskins scored 16 points and Frankie Johnson scored 15.
The Royals conclude the regular season on Saturday versus Mars Hill University on Senior Day at the Levine Center. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. General admission is $6 and all students will receive free admission with their Queens ID.
