CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 9/9 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (27-3, 19-1 SAC) started slow, but pulled away from Mars Hill University (9-19, 3-17 SAC), 108-91, on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the Levine Center. The win gave the Royals their 27
th victory of the year, setting a new program record for regular-season wins.
Van Turner Jr. led Queens with a career-high 28 points on nine of 13 3-point shooting.
Shaun Willett recorded his 24
th double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Blake Morrow scored 13 points,
Lewis Diankulu added 12,
Daniel Carr scored 12 with seven assists and three steals, and
Jachai Taylor scored 11 points.
After a back-and-forth opening 15 minutes, Queens used an 8-0 run, capped by a Willett dunk and a Morrow layup, that stretched the lead to nine, 40-31, with 3:25 left in the first. The lead hit 10 points, 45-35, with 1:20 remaining in the half, when Turner connected on the fourth of his nine 3's. Queens led 47-39 at halftime.
Early in the second half, Turner completed a four-point play after he was fouled by Austin Gilyard on a left-wing 3. His made free throw put Queens in front, 66-51, with 14:57 left.
The lead hit 20 when Turner's final 3-pointer gave Queens a 76-56 edge with 11:56 left. The Royals extended the lead to its largest, 29 points, when Taylor's jumper made the score 99-70 with 4:41 to play.
In total, Queens shot 55.7 percent from the field and 48 percent from 3-point range. The Royals compiled 23 assists on 39 made field goals.
Mars Hill was led by 31 points from Ja'Shawn Brooks and 20 points from Gilyard. The Lions shot 54.1 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point line, but were forced into 15 turnovers and were outrebounded 35-28.
The Royals enter the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, after claiming the South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship. Queens will meet eighth-seeded Carson-Newman University on Wednesday night at the Levine Center in the conference quarterfinals.
