CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore outside
Tristan Santoyo matched his season-high with 16 kills in leading the Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team to a 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 15-25, 23-25, 15-10) win over University of Mount Olive on Friday night inside Curry Arena.
The win was the second in a row for Queens (4-11) and the first in program history over the Trojans (5-10).
Following a Queens victory in a tightly contest first set, the Royals held Mount Olive to a -.091 hitting mark in the second to win 25-18 and go ahead 2-0 in the match.
Queens opened the second set on a 9-4 run and extended the advantage to 19-10 following a double block from senior
Alexander Schinzing and
Cody Nix. Sophomore
JP Payne ended the set with a kill to keep the Royals ahead by two.
Mount Olive rebounded to win the third and fourth sets, hitting .478 as a team in the third, to force a deciding fifth set of play.
The fifth set of action saw three early ties on the scoreboard before the Royals went on a 6-1 run to open up an 8-4 advantage over Mount Olive. The Trojans twice cut the deficit to two points, but Queens was able to side out each time and hang on for the five-point win.
Schinzing filled up the stat sheet for Queens, finishing with 38 assists, five digs, four service aces, and three total blocks. Sophomore
Josh Bragg tallied eight kills and a season-high 11 digs, while fellow sophomore
JP Payne had nine kills from the middle. Second-year libero
Ruben Greenstein paced the defense with nine digs.
Queens remains at home for a match against Barton College tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Levine Center.
