CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team had its two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-17) loss to Barton College inside the Levine Center.
Barton (11-3), ranked near the top of the NCAA in several offensive categories, hit .256 as a unit and committed just 11 attack errors on offense. The Queens (4-12) offense went cold, hitting at a -.011 mark in the match.
Queens began the match with a service ace from senior
Alexander Schinzing and a double block from Schinzing and sophomore
Aleksandar Perisic for an early lead.
Barton responded with a 7-2 run to overtake the lead and remain in front for the rest of the set. With set point on the horizon, Queens rallied for three unanswered points behind a
Josh Bragg kill, a Barton attack error and a solo block from sophomore
Cody Nix but could not overcome the deficit.
The Bulldogs led from start to finish in the second frame to build a 2-0 match advantage. However, the Royals opened the third set on a 7-5 run, highlighted by back-to-back service aces from freshman Cayden Frye, to gain momentum.
Queens remained in front by a 10-9 score following a kill from sophomore
Tristan Santoyo, but four unanswered Bulldog points put the visitors in front for good. Barton scored the set's final six points to secure the road win.
Santoyo had a team-high 10 kills in the match as well as seven digs and Nix finished with seven kills and a .462 hitting mark to go along with three total blocks. Bragg and fellow sophomore
Ruben Greenstein led the team with eight digs on defense.
The Royals head to Tennessee next week for consecutive matches against Lincoln Memorial University and King University (Tenn.). Thursday's match against LMU is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time from Harrogate and Friday's match against the Tornado also begins at 7 p.m. from Bristol.
