CHARLOTTE N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team picked up a key South Atlantic Conference win, routing the Wolves of Newberry College 79-57 inside Curry Arena on Wednesday night.
The victory helps Queens (9-13, 4-12 SAC) move up one spot in the League standings as the Royals make a late-season push for the conference tournament.
Queens shot a season-high 52.7 percent from the field and the defense forced 20 turnovers en route to holding the Wolves (13-9, 7-8 SAC) to more than 20 points below their season scoring average.
Queens led 25-17 after the first quarter of play, thanks in large part to an individual 6-0 run from senior
Lade Adepoju. Adepoju's 17 first-half points helped guide the Royals to a 42-33 lead at intermission.
The Royals opened the second half on a 12-7 run as a 3-pointer from freshman Tia MicMillian went through the net as the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter and give Queens a 14-point lead.
The lead grew to as large as a 24-point margin for Queens on a free throw from junior
Madison Sexton with 3:22 to play as Queens cruised to the home victory.
Adepoju led all players with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting to go along with six rebounds and four steals in just 25 minutes of action.
Freshman
Jaymi Golden knocked down 2-of-3 attempts from deep, chipping in 16 points, while sophomore
Kristian Eanes finished with 13 points. Freshman
Jaleah Goff registered 10 points and eight rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double.
Queens has a week away from competition before welcoming Catawba College to Curry Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 20 for a conference test. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
