YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. –
Jermaine Patterson scored a career-high 22 points, and
Daniel Carr also scored 22, along with five assists and three steals, as the No. 7/8 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (1-0) edged Young Harris College (0-1), 110-96, in Friday night's season opener at YHC Basketball Arena.
Jamari Smith added a career-high 17 points and five rebounds on four of six shooting and 9-for-9 free-throw shooting as the Royals won on opening night for the fifth straight season.
Up 15-13 with 13:13 to play in the first half, the Royals used an 11-0 run that featured seven points from
Jachai Taylor, to take a 26-13 lead. Later in the first, with 3:49 remaining, Queens stretched its lead to 16 points, 51-35, after a
Jordan Oakley layup.
However, Young Harris countered with an 11-3 run, capped by back-to-back 3's from Kristian Collins, that tightened the score in the final moments of the first half. Queens led 55-50 at halftime.
In the second half, the Royals relinquished the lead with 15:01 remaining when Jonathan King's fastbreak layup put YHC in front, 69-67. The second-half lead was the Mountain Lions' first lead since the score was 2-0 in the game's first minute. King led all scorers with 23 points.
The Royals reclaimed the lead, 74-73, with 12:36 to play after Smith knocked down a pair of free throws.
With 6:13 to go, and up by 90-89, Queens embarked on a 14-3 run that iced the game. The run featured seven consecutive points from Patterson and gave the Royals a 104-92 lead with 3:35 left.
Queens shot 47.9 percent from the field, 47.8 percent from the 3-point line, and 68.9 percent from the free-throw line (31-45). The Royals finished with a +14 turnover margin after forcing the Mountain Lions into 29 turnovers.
Young Harris shot 52.6 percent from the field, 36.7 percent from 3-point range and 69.4 percent at the stripe (25-36). The game featured 60 combined personal foul calls and 81 combined free-throw attempts.
